Masks! Masks! Masks!

This post is everything face mask related. I like buying and trying new masks and making my own.

This post won’t deal with homemade masks, I’ll make a post about that another day!

Today we focus on masks you can buy in different stores, or online, that won’t break the bank.

Over the last few weeks I’ve been playing around with masks, some are new and some are old – that I’ve tried before. I’m aware that when using masks you’ve got to use them more than once a weeks to see their true effect but when it comes to trying new masks I only try one a week. I do this because I have sensitive skin and some products can cause me to have break outs. If I enjoy a mask then I’ll repurchase and use more regularly. If you checked out my Love Me Beauty: April Edit post then you will know that I mentioned I was suffering from a break out due to a trying a new mask. I’ll get into the details of this later.
Right now, my skin is back on track and by that I mean it’s back to its typical self. If you want to know what my skin type is, take a trip to my About page. I’ve compiled all details about my skin type, hair type, etc there for ease.

1. Boots Tea Tree and Witch Hazel Peel Off Face Mask 10ml & 50 ml.

Retails for £2.99

Retails for 99p

The Boots tea tree and witch hazel mask is part of a tea tree and witch hazel Range. The two main ingredients are known to possess benefits for the skin.

The claims of this mask are:

    • To grab dirt and lift it out of your pores
    • To help to remove blackheads
    • To help tighten pores and prevent future breakouts

I have bought both sizes; the 10ml to test it and then a 50ml to use regularly. What I’ve found when using this mask is that it is gentle, for a peel off mask. It comes away from the skin with ease and is not rough, painful or anything of that nature. The downside of this is that, unlike other peel off masks, you don’t get the satisfaction of peering at all the gunk it’s pulled from you pores because it is so gentle.

This mask does help to cleanse the skin, tighten pores and I found that it, in my experience, helps to matify areas of my face. With regular use the redness in my skin began to disappear with the aid of this mask. It’s a travel friendly tube and as it is a boots product it’s subject to periodical offers such as 3 for 2 or Buy One Get One Free.

I would recommend this mask if you suffer from break outs – witch hazel and tea tree are great to help rid your skin of blemishes, if you have sensitive skin and/ or prefer gentler peel off masks I think you may enjoy this. Fair warning it is sticky and I would recommend using a tool to spread this across your face otherwise the product sticks to your fingers.

The biggest downside for me is that this mask cannot be used when relaxing in a bath. It doesn’t dry!

        2. Boots Ingredients Sheet Mask Range 20ml

This is a whole range of sheet masks by Boots aimed for a different skin requirement you may have. They retail for £2.50.

I purchased both the masks above when they were on a two for £3 offer. At the moment though, this range of masks is on a 50p save offer.

        The claims are:

        • This Specially formulated sheet mask enticed with charcoal and willow bark known to help cleanse and purify skin.

A skin care pick me up that will leave your skin feeling cleansed, purified and revitalised in just 15 minutes.

This is the mask that caused my break out! It may be due to the fact that this mask is for cleansing and purifying purposes. It may be that it draws out impurities in my skin, thereby causing a break out and resulting in fresher, clearer skin but I doubt it. This mask directed me to leave on my face for 10-15 minutes but approx 7 mins in my face began to tingle and heat up. I, naturally, removed the mask immediately and washed my face with cold water.

I can’t say much about the claims and how accurate they were but I can say this mask was similar to the KoreBeauty mask in the sense that it was slippery and had a lot of liquid product that made my face tacky.

        The claims are:

        • This specially formulated sheet mask is enriched with the floral extracts of Lotus Flower and Tiger Lily designed to help leave your skin shining with radiance and looking brighter. Formulated to help leave your skin looking and feeling brighter in just 15 minutes.

This mask did not aggravate my skin but didn’t truly brighten my skin. This mask, similar to the above, had the issue of being an overly wet mask. This one had a sort of creme that sat on the sheet as opposed to a liquid. It felt wet on the face and it slides off a fair amount.

These masks aren’t ones you can place on and go do other things whilst it works it’s magic. Move too much and you run the risk of the mask sliding down your neck.

The sheet mask range is not terrible, I did enjoy the radiance mask – I had a glow on my skin after using it. I would probably avoid the charcoal mask again to save myself a break out. I would like to try more from this range before making a complete decision.

These are the sheet masks when on

        3. Quick Fix Facials Calming Clay Mask 100ml

These masks are part of a range as well. I originally thought they were a Boots own brand product until I saw them in Tesco. Quick Fix Facials Retail for £4.00 – £5.00 and can be used 10 times.

Problem skin? Need a Quick Fix? Here’s the solution – wonder masks packed with hero ingredients to effortlessly and efficiently banish everyday skin issues

I chose to use the Calming Clay mask as it states that it is designed for sensitive and red skin. ( sounds like me )

This mask states it has the solution for skin that faces problems such as skin that is sensitive, prone to redness, irritated and misbehaving.

        The solution is:

        • Oatmeal – helps to relieve skin dryness and discomfort
        • Aloe Vera – perfect for helping to reduce skin inflammation and provides moisture
        • Chamomile Extract – helps soothe and calm sensitive skin
        • Rose Extract – helps minimise redness caused by enlarged capillaries

I love this mask! It’s a wash off mask and it does exactly what it says it should. The redness and unevenness in my skin tone almost all disappears after one use and my skin feels soft and refreshed. It can be a little messy when applying but also has a cooling feeling when putting on the skin.

I haven’t yet tried anything else from the range because I am so in love with this one.

        4. Garnier Moisture Bomb Tissue Mask

Keep your eyes peeled for a review on the face wash!

I’ve mentioned this mask before in my review of the KoreBeauty mask. This is an all-time favourite mask since last summer. I was having some trouble with my face being extremely dry and I purchased this mask on a whim ( it was on offer for 99p) and I stock up on it whenever possible.

This mask can retail for £1.49 – £4.00. But you can catch it on a special offer for 99p every few months!

        The claims are:

        •  Super-hydrating revitalising mask for dehydrated skin.
        •  Intensely rehydrates skin,
        •  reduces the look of fine lines, and revives radiance.
        • Enriched with pomegranate extract, hyaluronic acid, and plant serum.

On a side note, this mask smells gorgeous! The moisture bomb range is infused with pomegranate and I love the smell. If you do not like the smell of pomegranate stay clear.

You leave the mask on your face for 15 minutes and just one mask gives you a week of hydrating serum. My skin always feels hydrated after using this and my make up applies smoothly for days afterwards. If you struggle with dry skin, have mature skin or are just in need of a hydrating pick me up this mask is perfect! My skin had a naturally radiant glow to it that I am addicted to.

        10/10 would recommend!

        5. Sanctuary 5 minute Detox Mask 15ml and 100ml

Sanctuarys thermal mask retails for £2.50 for the sachet ( 15ml ) and £10 for the large tube ( 100 ml ). However, there is more than enough product in the sachet. When I used the sachet I had so much product on my face that I did not get to fully experience the ‘heating’ effect. When using this mask you experience a few seconds of warmth, like a tingle on your face that gets hotter but nothing too uncomfortable.

I was scared when using this mask that I would react badly but on the contrary this mask was amazing.

        • Warming charcoal treatment for perfectly clean and purified skin
        • The warmth of this self-heating mask helps to open up the pores so the charcoal and kaolin clay can help draw out impurities from deep within the skin.
        • As well as purifying, the mark also helps to rebalance the skin’s oil levels to clarify, cleanse and leave skin with a silky touch.
        • Essential oil of myrrh helps smoothe and calm.

My pores were smaller after one use, my face felt firmer and my skin looked cleansed. Like deeply cleaned of any impurities. My skin was soft for a number of days and make up applied smoothly afterwards. There was no tackiness after washing the mask off, just a silky-satin feel to the skin.

        6. Garnier Volcano Mask 8ml

Part of a range of wash off masks

Garnier’s Volcano Mask retails for £1.50 and despite being smaller in ‘ml’ is so similar to number 5, the sanctuary mask.

I experienced the same heating effect when applying the mask and the same benefits once the mask had been washed off. A definite dupe if you cannot get your hands on the sanctuary thermal mask.

The volcanic mask, apart from sounding awesome, claims:

        • It is a self-heating clay texture  that minimises the appearance of pores for pure, smooth skin.
        • Purifies the skin
        • Mattifies the skin
        • Unclogged pores
        • Over time makes pores less visible
        • Contains no Parabens.

        7. No7 Heavely Hydration Mask 100ml

You may think, hey ain’t this mask sort of high end drugstore? Well yes, it is. It retails at £12.50 but, as mentioned before on my blog, Boots every so often does give out No7 Coupons which knocks off £5 from No7 Skin Care. Which means the mask now retails for £7.50

This offer runs until 30th April

I have to be honest. The first time I used this mask I hated it. The product did nothing for me and just sat on top of my face making me feel sticky and shiny.

I avoided this product for ages.

Recently however, I used this again. ( My Mother owns one ) and it wasn’t as horrible as I remembered.

This mask is specifically targeted at dry to very dry skin. Which may be why I originally hated this product as I used to be of an oily skin type. In the last year or so my skin type has changed and become more combo with dry areas.

        Claims:

        • Give skin an intense moisture boost
        • Treat your skin to a little luxury with this delicately soft hydration mask to leave your skin feeling beautifully soft and smooth.
        • Created to help your dry skin behave like normal skin and provide tailored skin nutrition for healthy looking, bright and beautiful skin.

This mask has the signature No7 smell and has a soft whipped cream like texture. Your skin is extremely hydrated but also shiny. Not radiant but shiny. I guess you could say somewhat oily.

It’s a mask you only need to leave on for 3 minutes and I did not need to apply my moisturiser after using this.

        8. Purifying Charcoal Bubble Sheet Mask 22g

I bought this mask sometime last week. As soon as I saw it I thought of the bubble mask I had seen on YouTube, I believe It was a Korean brand? Correct me if I’m wrong. So I was pretty eager to try this.

This mask is currently retailing at £5.00 but if you buy into the Sanctuary offer on at Boots you can get this as a free gift.

Disclaimer: you have to spend £10 on selected items.

        Claims:

        • This black sheet mask of  charcoal &  oxygen helps cleanse pores
        • Purify your skin
        • Revitalise skin

        From the first use:

        • Helps pores appear less visible
        • Skin looks clearer & freshe
        • Excess oil is eliminated

        …as if you’d had a professional facial.
I would also like to add that this mask reduces redness and unevenness in your skintone from the first use.

It was a nightmare to open! I had to attack the package with scissors and I was afraid I would cut the mask itself.

You apply the mask in two separate sheets and it begins to foam immediately. You can feel it bubbling on your skin and watch it as the bubbles grow on your face. ( this made for some interesting snapchats ) After 10 mins you remove the mask. You are directed to massage in the remaining bubbles and then wash and moisturise. I chose to wash off the bubbles and I believe that worked fine. There was something about massaging the bubbles into my skin that didn’t seem clean to me.

My skin has felt mattified and cleansed since using this. I would love to purchase this mask again or masks that are similar to this.

        And so the foam begins…

We are finally at the end of Wednesday’s beauty post. I hope you found something you like and if you didn’t, check out my previous posts!

I’ll be back for Sunday Book Club.
